Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The engrailed gene is a multicellular development gene expressed in Drosophila melanogaster larvae. In this experiment, a Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) gene was fused with the engrailed gene of D. melanogaster, resulting in a functional Engrailed protein fused to a functional GFP. Since the engrailed gene is expressed in the ectoderm of the larva, it can be detected and located under fluorescent microscopy. In this picture, the same larva was exposed to light microscopy (bottom) and fluorescent microscopy (top), allowing for the observation of a larva and its internal organs under normal light as well as the location of the Engrailed protein under fluorescent microscopy.
