the purposes of the allied Generals,appears in his own manuscript notes on this period of the war, inwhich he writes that ** there were a thousand circumstances to provethat New York was their object, till de Grasses pilots refused to carryhis long-legged ships over the bar of New York. On his return to his camp at Newport, de Rochambeau immediatelyorganized the movement of his troops. Marching orders were issuedon the 9th June, and a first rendezvous had at Providence, where thearmy halted for eight days. On the i6th the Baron de Viomenil, secondin command, held a general review at Providence. These places were distantfrom each other about fifteen miles. The roads were heavy for theartillery, and the baggage was left behind. Arrived the 22d June atHartford, the regiment of Bourbonnais broke camp on the 2;th; that ofDeux-Ponts, the 26th; of Soissonnais, the 27th, and of Saintonge, the28th. They encamp>ed the first day at Farmington, twelves miles dis-tant : the second day, at Barons Tavern, thirteen miles; the third day,at Break-neck, thirteen miles, and the fourth, at Newtown, thirteen miles.Here the route was better. The artillery was far in the rear. By the orders of M. de Beville, the Quartermaster-General, theCount de Dumas, of his staff, went in advance of the line to reconnoitrethe country, prepare lodgings and select the camping grounds.
