It would be difficult to find a private dwelling on this continent initself possessing so much of the human element, or that more vividlyreflects the life and character of its succession of occupants. It was builtin 1765—the date in great iron letters gracing the outside of the edifice—-and it was so much finer and grander and more gorgeous than any otherhouse of the age that it had the effect of a palace.
