The humble plainness of Mr. Lincolns early life on thefrontier was somewhat talked about during the canvass, but the electionturned upon a great question of national politics, in which every voter onboth sides was deeply and even passionately interested. Mr. Lincolnsearly experiences were accidents, merely, in his career. He was notnominated because of them, nor were they factors in his election. To dis-cover a resemblance between the two campaigns is to trifle with fancies,losing sight of the deeply significant facts of history. Mr. Lincoln had grown up in the West when the West was new, and, incommon with all others so placed, he had been engaged in youth and earlymanhood in various occupations involving hard manual labor.
