He wasthirty-three, brilliant and versatile; was seven years in the state legisla-ture, four years mayor of Albany, and in the Old Congress from 1784 to1788. He was appointed chief justice of the state in 1798, and from 1801to 1814 was chancellor. Both Yates and Lansing vigorously opposed theConstitution, and when it was found impossible to patch up the Articlesof Confederation to meet the emergency, they took the ground that the 34?
