Versailles, the first palace I have ever yet seen, magnificent beyond myexpectations, the statues in the gardens and the spouting deities and seagods and in the basins most magnificent. I had not conceived anythinglike what I find it. Thence went to visit Mr. Bs uncle, Charge en Chef deMenagerie du Roi ; most affectionately received by him and family. Toolate to-day to see the King; and met in the gardens Monsieur the Kingseldest brother; had been walking in the gardens, eight or ten guards anda gent with him. This evening went to the Comedie Francaise at Versailles ;saw La Rencontre Imprevue, followed by La Triple Mariage ; both very wellplayed, and exceeding ours by having all the parts well played. After thecomedy, went to the Hotel de Comedie, and soon after received a polite in-vitation to sup with Madame Montensier, Directrice et Proprittaire de VOptrade Versailles, with three lovely girls, and one most lovely in person and easy 74 FIRST AERIAL VOYAGE ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL

JOHN JEFFRIES, M.D. manners, and a number of gents, several of those I had seen perform inthe comedy. Jan. 13th. At noon attended the Royal Chapel, saw the lady of theCompte DArtois and Monsieur at mass, and many of the nobility, greatnumber of the Royal Guards attended ; very great civility from the royalattendants in the palace, and particularly from the officers of the guardsand officers of state. Had the honor to be conducted through the apart-ments, and to see the King as he was going to walk. Mons. B. mentionedrne to him, as I stood by him, and he condescended to look at me, soonafter which Monsieur came near and most condescendingly came towardsme, and with a most kind and affable manner, after inquiring of his at-tendants if I spoke French, he made his compliments and said, I am veryglad to see you, Sir. He was dressed in black velvet and the Cordon Bleu, FIRST AERIAL VOYAGE ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL ?$ Star, &c. The King was dressed very plain, with brown leather spatter
