Thevariety of fields which he explored is shown by the fact that atthe first international exposition at London in 1861 he exhibiteda centrifugal pump, a separator for sugar factories, and a ma-chine for polishing plate glass, all of which were at the time insuccessful operation. His attention was first specially turned to iron-making at thetime of the Crimean war in 1S54. when he engaged in the con-struction of guns and projectiles. His work there soon showedhim that cast iron as ordinarily used was not satisfactory as amaterial for the heavier guns which were at that date beginningto be in demand, and he commenced experiments in the refiningof iron. . . .
