78 The Literary Digest for February 8, 1919 that is not unusual in rural Germany. As a matter of fact, horses are scarce.Pigs are noticeably scarce in a laud wherepork was and is now a favorite dish. The houses, with their Elizabethanstyle of architeetiu-e, gi^^ the villagesan air of greater vaiiety than have theFrench villages, and are painted oftenin bright colors. Along the roads one comes upon thefather of the family. With some sortof Alpine hat upon his head, a droopingpipe in his mouth, he follows the plow, jogging over the furrows in his high blackleather boots as if he had never stoptdoing it at all when the call came, Deutsch-land uber Alles! But those greenish-graycoats come from but one place. A whileago the father of the family was an ar-tilleryman, perhaps, shooting up townsfull of civilians. WHY POSTMASTER R
