According to a tradition, the twenty-four Korinthian 3«4 TOMB OF HADRIAN. columns in the centre nave of St. Pauls Basilica originallybelonged to this Moles Hadriani, which indicates its having beensurrounded by colonnades in the manner of a round peripteros.This conjecture becomes still more probable from the fact ofplastic works of art being mentioned in connection with themausoleum, which statues most likely stood in these colonnades :excellent works of art have indeed been found in the neighbour-hood. The chief part of the edifice has been preserved in theround tower of the Castello S. Angelo, which makes a carefulinvestigation of the interior a matter of some difficulty. Several

Fig. 412. designs of the original form of the building have been attempted.Fig. 411 shows that of Canina, who, in opposition to Hirt,assumes the existence of two external colonnades. Caninacrowns the building with a pyramidal roof, the top ornamentbeing a large pineapple of bronze, found in the neighbourhood,and at present in the garden of the Vatican. Of other smaller grave-monuments, partly containing thegrave-chambers, partly built above them, we possess a varietyof forms. They either resembled small round or square altars(eippi), or they consisted of simple pillars (hermce), the tops of STREET OF GRAVES AT POMPEII. 385 which, were rounded on one side, so as to almost resemble ahuman head cut in half. Of all these forms we see specimens inthe street of graves at Pompeii (Fig. 412). On both sides of thestreet (our view is taken from a point near the villa of Diomedes,Fig. 393) we see numerous graves, generally with the names ofindividuals or families inscribed on them.
