According to a tradition, the twenty-four Korinthian 3«4 TOMB OF HADRIAN. columns in the centre nave of St. Pauls Basilica originallybelonged to this Moles Hadriani, which indicates its having beensurrounded by colonnades in the manner of a round peripteros.This conjecture becomes still more probable from the fact ofplastic works of art being mentioned in connection with themausoleum, which statues most likely stood in these colonnades :excellent works of art have indeed been found in the neighbour-hood. The chief part of the edifice has been preserved in theround tower of the Castello S. Angelo, which makes a carefulinvestigation of the interior a matter of some difficulty. Several
