Fisr. 502. a belt, and generally a sleeve on the left arm. Their head wasuncovered. Their weapons of attack were the trident (fuscinaftridens) and the dagger; besides which theycarried a large net (iaculwn), in which theytried to entangle the secutores, the latterbeing armed with helmet, shield, and sword.Suetonius, in his life of Caligula (cap. 30), tellsof a fight between five gladiators of each class,in which the retiarii were beaten withoutoffering resistance ; but when by command ofthe emperor they were to be killed, one ofthem suddenly took a fuscina and killed allthe secutores. A mosaic (Fig. 501, a, b)illustrates their mode of fighting. In Fig.501, a, the secutor, entangled in the net, attacksthe retiarius lying on the ground, while the latter, having droppedhis trident, defends himself with a dagger.
