oldest form of the aulos isseen Fig. 241, b and n; it resembles a short shepherds pipe(schalmei), and the figures holding it in both cases are takenfrom the statues of shepherds. The form of the mouthpieceappears distinctly in Fig. 241, a, d, e, f. The clarinet (fiovavhos,jj.ovoKahafxos) with one tube only is seen also on the frieze of the I 208 DOUBLE AULOS. Parthenon; but still more common was the double clarinet, calledby the Romans tibice gemince. It consisted of two tubes blownsimultaneously by means of one common or two separate mouth-pieces (Fig. 241, a, d, e,f, i, k, I), and comprises as many notes asthe syrinx. The tube held in the right hand, and blown with theright side of the mouth, had three holes, and was called by theRomans tibia dextrai by the Greeks the male clarinet (auAo?avlpijios) ; the left tube had four holes, and was called tibiasinistra, or female aulos (av\6$ yvvaLKrjios).
