on the grave, are nowin the Museo Borbonico. On the right side of our illustrationwe see a wall covered by a gable; a low door in this wall leadsinto an uncovered square court adjoining one corner of the villaof Diomedes, in which court the arrangements for the funerealrepast, the last ceremony of the burial, have been found. In this c c 386 STREET OF GRAVES AT POMPEII. court we recognise a triclinium funebre resembling the dining-rooms of private houses, with their gently inclining couches;its walls were covered with paintings, now in an al) but destroyedcondition. Next to this triclinium stands, on a rich base, analtar-like monument, which is amongst the finest and best pre-served tombs of Pompeii. It lies in a court, the wall of whichis adorned with small turrets ; a door in this wall opens into thestreet. The grave-chamber lies inside the base (see the view ofthe interior, Fig. 402) ; the cippus, resembling an altar, whichrises above the base on several steps to a height exceeding

Munatius Faustus, and to theirliberated slaves of both sexes. Amongst the monuments followingon the same side, and still visible in our illustration, we mentionthe cenotaphium of C.
