THE PURSUIT. 193 considered unassailable, provisions and ordnance storesfor a vast army. In the dismay which their sudden routcreated, they, in the darkness of the night, threw asmany of these stores as possible upon their teams, andhurried them off. But as the dawn approached, andthey heard the tramp of our advancing columns, theyapplied the torch to every thing that would burn, and fledwith the utmost precipitation. As a brigade of General Shermans command, underJefferson C. Davis, came up, the depot was found inflames. There were immense piles of burning corn-mealand bacon. Barrels and boxes were scattered around inthe wildest confusion. Pontoon-boats, gun-carriages,wagons, were piled together in smouldering ruin. Foodof all kinds — tea, coffee, sugar, flour, molasses — wasmingled with cartridge-boxes, broken muskets, and smallarms of every kind, — strewing the ground.
