It was laid out byWindegastus, Privy Councillor of King Pharamundus I. in theyear 422. According to Sigebertus Gemblacensis^^ it was namedaftor Windegastus and meant Windegastsheim. MelchiorAdam Pastorius relates that in his time the following- verses werestill to be read on the wall of the central room of the old Rathaus: Cf. Beehive, p. 222. Cf. M. A. The town became an imperial city (Reichs-Stadt) in 1172by a decree of Friedrich Barbarossa, who granted it the Privi-legia Libertatis. )\I. A, Pastorius describes the city as havingconsisted of an inner or older town, surrounded by a wall, theremains of which were visible in his time, and the outer town.which was added to the older part in 1424 for protection in theHussite wars. In 1410 bridges of squares of red sandstone wereerected on the road toward Lenckersheim. The first watchtowerwas built on the Weinberg in 142S.
