The wonderful meeting held on thisgreat day rose nobly to the occasion. Withouta moments unnecessary delay, a relief expeditionwas organised, equipped, and started on its way,with Robert Collyer a not inconspicuous memberof the committee in charge. This trip to Donelson seems to have made adeeper and more lasting impression on Collyersmind than any other of his war experiences. Robert Collyer From a Photograph taken on his visit to Boston in 1862 OF ROBERT COLLYER 263 field. In a sermon preached to his people^ onthe Sunday following his return, March 2, hegave a vivid description of what he had seen andfelt on this occasion. His first impression wasof Cairo, the distributing centre of all this fiercelyembattled area of the Middle West, and there-fore the place where were encountered the firsttraces of the great conflict. A mud-hole, asDr. Collyer describes it, noisy, crowded, clutteredwith supplies moving one waj^ and the patheticdebris of the battle, including those long boxesthat hold only and always the same treasure,moving the other, it was a city hideous to enterand good to leave behind. Therefore the Chi-cago party remained only long enough to changefrom steam train to boat. A journey of onehundred and sixty miles up the Ohio and Cum-berland Rivers brought them at last to Donelsonand the work which they had come to do. Collyers first task, upon landing
