In 1900 the school boards began to copewith the situation by opening the play grounds duringthe vacation months, eciuii)ping them with api)aratus forthe entertainment of the children, and appointing asupervisor to direct them in their games.

A librarian visits theplayground at certain times of the day to exchangebooks for home reading and to conduct a story hourunder the shade trees. The stories are freciuently dram-atized, the open air being admirably adajited for this.Besides adding to the pleasure of the children and in-creasing the attendance of the j)layground. the libraryaims at securing many of the children as i>ermanent bor-rowers.
