At Great Barrington Mr. Bris-tol has established a charming studio, which 858 THE SUMMER HAUNTS OE AMERICAN ARTISTS: is a perfect arbor of Virginia creepers andother vines. Mr. Bristol is best known to thepublic for his lakes, but he delights alsoin river effects, and here upon the banks of theHousatonic and the Green River,which Bryantloved, he has sketched with such friends asBellows and Shattuck. Still to the westward gleams Lake George,the favorite resort of George H. Yewell. Hereby the lake Mr. and Mrs. Loop have a country- and individual trees, with their inherited char-acteristics. Here are the selfish beech, thrust-ing other trees away from it and taking up allthe cleared space for itself, the birch in herbridal dress of white satin, the hemlock shel-tering a spruce — for these trees are lovers,and can no more bear to be separated thangoldenrod and aster. A step farther and we have reached theAdirondacks, that enchanted country withwhich Charles Dudley Warner has made usso well acquainted, where man returns to adelightful savagery, and fishing, campmg,climbing, and hunting take the place of theexcitements and toil of the city. Here too theemancipated society woman exchanges herelaborately ordered dinners for the coffee-potsmoking over a camp-fire, a string of trout,and a basket of berries ; while the theater andopera are re()laced by fish and bear stories. It is possible that the visitor at Keene Val-ley to-day would hardly recognize this picture ;but here, at all events, are the everlasting hills,and just beyond them are the forests, lakes,and solitudes of the wilderness.
