Just east ofthe Zuni Indian reserve is the Mormon agricultural settle-ment of Ramah on Pescado creek. Fort Wingate and itsmilitary reservation are fifteen miles southeast of Gallup. Itis the only military post in New Mexico occupied at present-The following are the post offices: Blackrock, Clarkville,Fort Wingate, Gallup, Gibson, Guam, Manuelito, Ramah,Thoreau, Tohatchi and Zuni. The county seat is Gallup, on the Santa Fe Pacific Railroad. Gallup has at present apopulation of 2,500 people, including the families in the coalcamps of the various companies at short distances from thecity limits. As many other western towns, Gallup possesses anotable contingent of thrifty, brainy Scotch, English andIrish folk, who have added very materially to the rapidgrowth and solid development of the community. Thirty Indian trading stores on the reser-vation get their supplies from Gallup merchants or by thew^ay of Gallup. The McKinley County Republican is the onlynewspaper, being published weekly. Gallup is above all, a coal mining town and its coal industryis practically thus far only partly developed. Underneath thelarge region of which Gallup is the center, immense depositsof coal have been treasured by nature, awaiting the thriftyhand of capital to bring them up to the surface and make ofGallup one of the richest coal uiining towns of the southwest.One mine alone, property of the Colorado Fuel and IronCompany, produced in one day (June 22, 1903), 1,550 tons ofcoal. The coal can be dug easily and there is practically nodanger for the miner in the mines unless he should be exceed-ingly careless. No gas is to be feared. The coa
