1903, §3,103,500. Post offices, Albuquer-que, Old Albuquerque, Alameda, Carpenter, Chilih, Griegos,Martinez, Milagros, Padillas, Pajarito, Palma and Isleta. Ofits 1,002,962 acres, 563,123 acres have been appropriated, be-ing located mostly in land grants, while 425,000 acres are stillsubject to entry under the United States land laws. The principal industries are manufacturing, farming, fruitgrowing, stock raising and railroading. Its central location,great diversity of topography and fine climate, railroad facili-ties and the fact that the Rio Grande flanked by a fertile val-ley on each side, cuts through the county from north to south,place its prosperity on a permanent basis. There are 250,000acres which eventually can be placed under irrigation and300,000 acres are considered good pasture. In seasons ofaverage rainfall, the grass grows abundantly and owing to itspeculiar character cures on the ground during the fall, andinstead of washing out and becoming valueless like the ordi-

The total area under ditch at present is 20,-000 acres of which about 5,000 are cultivated. There are manyavailable reservoir sites and room for modern irrigation sys-tems. The soil of the valley is strong, especially in the min-eral elements, being composed almost entirely from detritusfrom the mountains and foothills and lacking only the addi-tion of a very little animal or vegetable matter now and thento keep it rich indefinitely. The true farming policy is tohave small farms, closely cultivated and yielding as land canonly be made to yield under irrigation. In addition to theordinary grain and vegetable crops, tobacco does especiallywell. Some of the soil being alkaline, asparagus proves veryprofitable.
