KAAS HUNTING ALL that is told here happened some timeJT\. before Mowgli was turned out of the See-onee wolf-pack. It was in the days when Baloowas teaching him the Law of the Jungle. Thebig, serious, old brown bear was delighted tohave so quick a pupil, for the young wolves willonly learn as much of the Law of the Jungle asapplies to their own pack and tribe, and run awayas soon as they can repeat the Hunting Verse:i( Feet that make no noise; eyes that can see inthe dark; ears that can hear the winds in theirlairs, and sharp white teeth— all these things are 48 THE JUNGLE BOOK the marks of our brothers except Tabaqui andthe Hyena, whom we hate.
