It is claimed that the smaller machine (Fig. 6) with twomen and two horses will dig 300 to 400 yards of ditch per day(7 in. wide, 3 ft. 7 in. to 4 ft. deep) ; and the larger machine(Fig. 7) with four horses and three men, 400 to 600 yards per day(12 in. wide, 4 ft. deep). The smaller machine has been triedvery successfully in England, both under easy conditions andin stiff clay. It is understood that near Boston, Lines, workingin hght, loamy soil with a sandy bottom, the machine withtwo horses cut a trench 130 yards long and 3 ft. 6 in. deep inIJ hours, and with a Fordson tractor cut 100 yards 3 ft. deep in
