Reform,or the birth of a new idea, grows from the bottom up, not from the top clown.If we are to be remembered, to be known to future peoples, we must extendour vision of National Art to include both the simple and the vital, nationaland individual ideas and their expression in every field of social and indus-trial activity. Art is History just as truly as are political movements andwars, and its tendency is much more uplifting. It is not the privilege ofthese pages to discuss the academic problem of National Art, rather togive historical record to the various expressions of Art that are treasuredin America today, from which a National Art will ultimately arise. Repro-ductions from private collections of old paintings, miniatures, and portraits,either by known or unknown painters, will be given record, especially suchas pertain to historical events, or historical personages in the buildingof the Nation. Photographs will be safely returned to their owners. 143
