It was upon a commercial venture and while doing business in Englandthat the death of Sir Charles Hobby occurred in London in the year 1714.The inventory of his estate was filed April 23, 1716. He left no will andhis business agent, John Colman, his brother-in-law, who had charge ofhis business affairs in Boston while Hobby was away in foreign ports, tookcharge of the estate, which was later found to be insolvent. Among themany items in the accounting is Silver Plate to the value of £342-195-0;seven slaves, value £300; Sloop Sea Flower; a Coach; Mansion houseon Marlborough Street; Pistols, Swords, Pikes, Hatchets, Drums,Billhooks, and so forth, a fair arsenal for those days; in all avalue of nearly £2,000. Deeds of half the Province of New Hampshirewas one item which was put down as worthless, the General Court of NewHampshire claiming that the early settlers bought their land direct fromthe Indians. The Province House in the year 1702 was the residence of MajorCharles Hobby, who, on February 19th of this same year, had born to hima daughter Mary, according to the record in the Old South Church. Thishistoric mansion was built in 1679, by Peter Sargeant. In 1701, Sargeantmoved to the house of his new wife (the widow of Sir William Phipps)and rented his house to Major Charles Hobby. This house was locatednearly opposite the Old South Church. It was purchased in 1716 by theProvincial Legislature, and occupied by each of the successive RoyalGovernors down to the Revolution, and is described in Landmarks of Bostonby Drake.
