monument, and the most perfect tribute that can be given him on thiscentenary is to do as he would have done. Magniloquence over victory,glorification of achievement, jubilation, are not qualities of the truestgreatness. The Lincoln who lives in my affections would lift his handagainst such laudation. The century which his own life marks with blood-shed would lie heavy upon his heart, and the burden would be lightenedonly by the vision of his people re-united in the bonds of a common brother-hood, loving and laboring for the uplift of every breathing thing. If,through the mysterious processes of creation, in the immortality beyond,the dead can look back upon the earth from which they have risen, thenLincoln, on this centenary, will find joy or grief only in the spirit of itscommemoration. These centenaries are the tests of the intellectual andmoral spirit of the times; they are taking your measure and mine. I havefaith to believe that they will prove the triumph of American character.
