m SHIS is an exact photographic reproduction of the original accountof Captain Reuben Marcy, a prominent merchant during theAmerican Revolution, against the Continental Government formoney and goods advanced to soldiers and their families.Captain Marcy was born in Connecticut, November 28, 1732,and his store was one of the chief distributing points, goodsbeing hauled overland by oxen. During the blockade, he trans-ported goods as far as Portsmouth, New Hampshire, though his mainsources of supply were Boston and Providence. To meet the demands ofthe trade, he often had over thirty teams on the road at the same time. Inthe American Revolution, he was especially kind to the families of absentsoldiers, and the freedom with which he extended credit made heavy draftsupon his fortune. This document, charging his loans to the governmentin 1776—the year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence—waspaid in sheets of dollars, but as the United States did not adopt the decimalsystem f
