As the country grew more settled, riches andcomfort increased, and once more the ivory carversturned their attention to ornamenting the little ob-jects of civil life, and we find exquisitely carvedwriting tablets, caskets and articles for the toilet, ascombs, long hair wavers, and above all, the coversfor the little metal mirrors that were worn hangingfrom the girdle.
