inting. These sculptures, unlike theunmixed ivory of the French carvings, were alwaysframed in narrow intarsia borders. Small trip-tychs (Fig. 37) developed into enormous size, asthe great altar-piece in the old Sacristy at theCertosa at Pavia and the famous retable in theLouvre, which comes from the abbey of Poissy,and was the gift of the Due de Berri, brother ofCharles V., and one of the regents for the youngCharles VI. in 1380. It contains his portrait andthat of his wife, Jehanne de Bourgogne. Thefragments of a third large retable still exist,divided between the John Rylands Library atManchester and the Victoria and Albert Museum. These retables are large in size, but not great indesign, and though the groups of figures are lovelyin detail, they are not impressive as a whole, thelow relief giving little scope for the play of lightand shade. There are many beautiful polygonal casketswith domed covers, also combs and other smallarticles, and a very excellent account of the whole 154
