The peculiar dumpydolphin is an interesting specimen of longevity,going through more than two thousand years oflife from the Choragic Monument at Athens to aLondon Drinking Fountain without changing aline. The surprised gesture of the accompanyingdisciple (Fig. 9), and of the Three Children in theFiery Furnace (Fig. 10), is another of those delight-ful conventions that meet us at every turn in thismost naive group of sculptures. We meet it againin the St. Lupicien panels, which are very similar,but nearer in technique to the scenes on the Throneof Maximian. The subjects vary little, but insteadof Jonah there is a charming picture of the Womanof Samaria standing by the well. The figure ofChrist seated in the central panel is old andbearded, and it so closely resembles the St. JohnBaptist on the Throne (Fig. 12) that, except
