It was clearly brought outin this investigation that the method of seating in school-houses was defective in the extreme, leading to permanentdeformity in the spine and distorted eyesight. In thisrespect, Boston is far behind other cities, such as Worces-ter, Springfield and Lowell. In these places it has beenrecognized that the only remedy for the evil lies in pro-viding adjustable desks, so that the pupil may be per-manently fitted wath the desk he occupies, and nothingbut adjustable desks are purchased. The director ofphysical training in the public schools at Woonsocket,R. I., in 1901, after examining about four thousandpupils, reported that over two hundred children could nottouch their feet to the floor in any seat in their respectiverooms, and that twenty-six children were too large forthe seats given them. Blocks were provided in many cases, but thefact remains that much of the school furniture is too largefor the children who attend school in this city. Before the National Academy of Medicine, Dr. JohnJay Moore read a paper on school furniture in which hesaid: I will endeavor to explain what has been the cus-tom in seating our schools, and then you can readily seewhere the difificulty exists. When we have had a newbuilding to seat, the grade of the school and the num-ber of pupils to be accommodated in each room is ascer-tained by the superintendent, and the approximate agesof the children who will attend the school of a givengrade. From this the size of the seats and desks to beused are obtained, regardless of the heights of the pupilsin the dififerent rooms.
