planning the location of a school building, great careshould be taken to see that it will be well favored bysunlight. Sites in hollows and near tall adjoiningstructures should be avoided. In the first place, no ob-stacle to the entrance of light shquld exist outside thebuilding; and, secondly, a plentiful supply should not behampered by too few or too small windows. A won-derful improvement in the lighting of school buildingshas been made in the last quarter century. A number ofschoolhouses, particularly the older ones, were founa verydeficient in light, due to the small, low windows. Fig.10 is a type showing how little attention the wmdows re-ceived in the construction of a school building twenty-five years ago; and Fig. 11 is a strong contrast, giving anidea of a modern school building plentifully supplied withwindows. The best light will be had where the longer axis of thebuilding runs east and west and the windows are on thenorth and south sides only; but where a building contains

Light. 59 four or more rooms on each floor, it will be more difficultto arrange for a fair distribution of light. In such cases, thecorners of the building should face toward the cardinalpoints of the compass, enabling the sunlight to enter everyroom every day of the year. Aside from its advantages asregards light, a building so placed as to get a good sunexposure will be more easily heated and more healthful.For the best and most equal distribution of light, theschoolroom should be long and narrow, requiring win-dows on but one side. The desks should be so placed thatthe light will not shine in the pupils eyes, but come fromthe left and rear. The light from the left is best, becauseit falls without shadows upon the desk. As the greatmajority of pupils are right-handed, they would beannoyed, when writing, by the shadows that the light,coming from the right, would cast upon their work.
