While she was thinking about it, she heard the dooropen, and, looking round, she saw an old, old womancome into the room. She had on a red cloak, and awhite cap, and a queer, pointed hood on her head. In her hand she carried a little wooden pail full ofblack paint, and a brush was standing in it. In theother hand she held a cane, with a big yellow ball onthe top of it. She hobbled across the floor, and came and looked atthe baby. Thats a nice baby, she said. I am the FairyCrossette ; I go round to visit all the little children,and when I find any of them naughty, I steal upbehind them, and make a great black mark on theirfaces with my brush. And there the mark must staytill they have done some good and kind action. Then,my sister Pleasantette will wipe it away with a whitecloth. Then she put her hand in her big pocket, and took 54
