And to this spring, when the moon of thefalling leaves brought in the season of love andwar, the caribou bulls were wont to come, delight-ing to form their wallow in the pungent, salty mud. The bald twin peaks of Old Walquitch wereghostly white in the flood of the full moon, justrisen, and swimming like a globe of witchs fireover the far, dark, wooded horizon. But the bushyshelf and the spring by the thicket, were still inshadow. Along the trail to the spring, movingnoiselessly, yet with a confident dignity, came apaler shadow, the shape of a huge, gray-whitecaribou bull with wide-spreading antlers. At the edge of the spring the bull stopped andbegan sniffing the sharp-scented mud. Apparentlyhe found no sign of a rival having passed that waybefore him, or of a cow having kept tryst there.Lifting his splendid head he stared all about himin the shadow, and up at the bare, illuminatedfronts of the twin peaks. /

Receiving no answer to his defiance, the greatbull turned his attention again to the ooze aroundthe spring. After sniffing it all over he fell tofurrowing it excitedly with the two lowermostbranches of his antlers, — short, broad, palmatedprojections thrust out low over his forehead, andcalled by woodsmen the ploughs. Every fewseconds he would toss his head fiercely, like anordinary bull, and throw the ooze over his shoul-ders. Then he pawed the cool, strong-smellingstuff to what he seemed to consider a fitting con-sistency, sniffed it over again, and raised his headto bell a fresh challenge across the spacioussolitudes.
