Moreover, he hadbeen allowed to realize that the dreaded man-creature which he had met so unexpectedly wasafraid of him! He came crashing over the bushes,and was so close at the womans heels that she hadbarely time to slam the shack door in his face. As she dropped the rude wooden latch into place,the woman realized with horror how frail the doorwas. Momentarily she expected to see it smashedin by a stroke of the monsters paw. She did notknow a bears caution, his cunning suspicion oftraps, his dread of the scent of man. There was no1 light in the shack, except a faintred gleam from the open draft of the stove, andthe gray pallor of the night sky glimmering inthrough the little window. The woman was sofaint with fear that she dared not search for thecandles, but leaned panting against the wall andstaring at the window as if she expected the bear

When the door was slammed in his face, the bearhad backed away in apprehension and paused tostudy the shack. But at the sound of the babysvoice he seemed to realize that here, at least, weresome individuals of the dreaded man tribe whowere not dangerous. He came forward and sniffedloudly along the crack of the door till the womansheart stood still. He leaned against it, tentatively,till it creaked, but the latch and hinges held.
