Knowing that the beavers do most of their work,or, at least, most of their above-water work, atnight, he had little hope of catching any of themabroad by daylight. He approached the dam, nev-ertheless, with that noiseless caution which hadbecome a habit with him in the woods, a habit whichrendered the woods populous for him and teemingwith interest, while to more noisy travellers theyseemed quite empty of life. One thing his studyof the wilderness had well taught him, which wasthat the wild kindreds do not by any means alwaysdo just what is expected of them, but rather seemto delight in contradicting the naturalists.
