n bearings of a flat shoe. They con.sequently bevelled oft aportion of the foot surface of the .shoe, so that only its outer portioncame in contact with the hoof. Just before the clo.se of the century aFrench veterinarian arrived in England and founded the Royal VeterinaryCollege. Charles Vial de Sainbel only lived a short while after establish-ing the college, but during that time he reintroduced a shoe flat onthe foot surface and concave towards the ground. The successor ofSainbel at the Veterinary College was a surgeon named Coleman, whotook great interest in the horses foot and shoeing. He published two HISTORY OF HORSE-SHOEING 431 volumes—one on the anatomy of the foot, with coloured plates, and oneon the jjrinciples of shoeing. About the same time a sporting gentleman,Strickland Freeman, issued a book on horse-shoeing. It is difficult tosay whether his or Colemans illustrations were the more artistic andcorrect.
