Tlie bone maybreak through the middle, or a piece of the upper angle only may betorn away from the rest. The fracture sometimesfollows upon repeated chronic sprain to the suspen-sory ligament, and there is reason to think thatin these cases the cohesion of the bone has beendiminished by an extension of the inflammatoryaction from the ligament to the bone to which itis attached, for it fre()^uently occurs that prior tobreakage the sesamoid bones have been for sometime more or less enlarged.
