asures of learning. Although there are no hornbooks extant that Iknow of which are earlier than the sixteenth century,there is evidence that the hornbook was used beforethen. I happen to have in my library an arithmeticalmanuscript of Sacrobosco, dated about 1400, in whichwe come unexpectedly upon the picture of a horn-book. The monk who was copying this manuscriptevidently became tired of Sacrobosco and his learningand so he made a little picture at the bottom of thepage. This picture is a rather crude drawing of aschool-room. We see the schoolmaster in his gown,and he is holding up before the pupil a hornbook onwhich are written not the usual alphabet but theArabic numerals (Figure 3). At the same time that the hornbook flourished,primers, or A B C books, were used more or less.Earlier than any hornbook which I have been able todiscover is this first page of an A B C book in manu-script, written about 1370. It will be noticed thatthis begins with the cross, followed by the alphabet.
