This town is theancient Bethsan or Beth Sean, the House of Rest, mentioned inScripture in connection with the disastrous battle of Gilboa, whereSaul, defeated by the Philistines, committed suicide. ThePhiHstines cut off his head and fastened his body to the walls ofBethsan.^ The surroundings of this towTi, watered by four differentstreams, are most picturesque, with luxuriant vegetation muchin evidence. Rabbi ben Lakisch said of Beisan : H Paradiseis to be found in Palestine, its gate is Beth Sean. We crossedthe Jordan about three miles before reaching Samakh, and on theleft obtained a view of the picturesque Djisr el Moudjamia, theBridge of the Meetings, which dates back to the times of theSaracens and is composed of a large pointed arch fianked on eachside by small and low arches. Semak, or Samakh (Arabic for fish ), is fifty-four milesdistant from Haifa and some 600 feet below the level of the 1 Sir Edwin Arnold. The Light of the World. I Samuel xxxi. 10.
