l mass of hills— and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and by the side ofJordan, that is, on the western and eastern plains. And ofthe early inhabitants thus enumerated, those who at least bytheir names are brought into the sharpest geographical con-trast are the Amorites or dwellers on the summits, andthe Canaanites or lowlanders. But it is in the history of the conquest of Palestine, thatthis peculiarity is the most strongly brought out. In mostcountries which consist of mountains and lowlands, two his-torical results are observable; first, that, in the case of inva-sion, the aboriginal inhabitants are driven to the mountains,and the plains have fallen into the hands of the conquerors ;secondly, that, in the case of semi-barbarous countries so sit-uated, the plains are the secure, the mountains the insecureparts of the region.
