gof Palestine, but a direct attack on Egypt. The taking ofJerusalem and the southern kingdom was purely incidental,so far as the purposes of Sennacherib, the Assyrian King, wasconcerned. To the Jews of course their own point of viewwas the one of supreme importance ; but to the world at large,their concerns were of but little account compared with thetremendous contest then imminent between Assyria and Egypt. Sennacherib, the King of Nineveh at the time of Hezekiahand Isaiah, is one of the great names of history. At the timeof his invasion of Palestine, he left a memorial which is notunworthily placed, and which commemorates him as one ofthe greatest of the Assyrian Kings. The remains which havebeen discovered in the Kouyunjik corner of the ruins of Nin-eveh, testify to his greatness, and there is proof enough thatso far as splendor, magnitude and luxury are concerned, hiscapital surpassed some of the great cities of modern times.The excavations which have been made by Layard in the I
