the ground-work of a cottage: Itis carefully preserved; and, with several other curio-sities, remains for public inspection. The learnedRoger Gale was of opinion, that these pavements werethe floors of the banqueting-houses, or of the grandapartments, chief rooms, or baths, in the private hou-ses of the better sort of people, even down to thelowest times. That the ruins of this ancient cityhave raised the ground, considerably above its formersurface, is very evident, from the situation of thesepavements, which are near two feet below the presentlevel. In the year 1770, as some men were employed inthrowing up a turnpike way, within this town, theydiscovered the foundations of a range of buildings,Sl6 feet in length, and 24 in breadth; the two out.sides, were exactly parallel to each other, running fromeast to west; and, between them were several partitions.These foundation-walls, were of stone, strongly cemen-ted, three feet thick; and five feet below the presentsurface. aldburgh. 315
