The skins are dressedand made as soft as a glove, and are very convenient forcarrying anything. Mine on this occasion contained, to •my surprise, several pieces of real English plate, in theshape of an old fashioned silver tea pot, a snuffer tray, twosilver forks, a table spoon and two tea spoons, besides theusual tinder box, tobacco and pipe, and some other triflingarticles. There Avas no mark or crest on the silver, andalthough I advertised for the owner no person has everclaimed the articles. The Kaffirs were no doubt on a return foray from thecolony, where they had probably murdered a whole familyat some homestead, and plundered the house beforeburning it. In many instances not a soul was left out ofwhole families that were fallen upon in isolated positions. .However, this party paid dearly for their foray.

CHAPTER IX. THE BOOMAH PASS. In December, 1850, the Kaffir war broke out that lasteduntil 1853. British Kaffraria had been held in militaryoccupation from the termination of the previous war(1848). The military head-quarters were established atKing Williams Town, and several minor posts wereoccupied in different parts of the country to keep theKaffirs in subjection. The Kaffir chiefs, however, formed a combination to-throw off the white mans supervision of their country,and committed several overt acts with the intention ofbringing on a war. Cattle were stolen from the colony,,and although traced into Kaffirland, and to the marauderskraals, the chiefs refused either to give up the beasts or tosurrender the thieves. Wagons were also stopped uponthe high roads and plundered, and in some instances theleaders and drivers killed.
