Text Appearing Before Image:
old as Paris, as Athens. It seemed tohave been born with poetic traditions. We may haveseen its red shirt, but its wash tub was hidden. Inthe early day all California was a fairy land and SanFrancisco was its capital. And in this rich glow ofgold and of sunset, a new spirit of mirth was born.Hither wandered a steamboat man and became theworlds greatest humorist. And here, a meditativefailure in the East wrote short stories that made hisname familiar to all tongues. Here is an extract froma letter written in the fifties by an Englishman: Itwas evening when I arrived in this strange town ofSan Francisco. I was alone when I arrived, but notfor more than a few moments afterward. As soonas I had alighted from the stage coach a man cameforward and said that as I looked lonesome he wouldtell me his real name if I wouldnt say anything aboutit. I was lonesome but I couldnt see what his realname might have to do with relieving the situation;and I so expressed myself to him, and he smiled sadly
Text Appearing After Image:
A JOSS HOUSE—CHINATOWN. No portion of the ill-fated City of San Francisco was so well known totravelers as the section known as Chinatown. The estimated number ofChinamen in this district before the fire was 45,000.
