PREFACE. The effects produced by the Arabs, while they held thesovereignty of Spain, have been sufficiently felt and acknow-ledged throughout Europe, to render their History a matterof great interest and research. Aware of this circumstance,various writers have, of late years, directed their attention tothe subject; though few have contributed to its elucidation.Without the means of attaining to that primary and purestsource of information, which the records of the Arabs possess,they have, for the most part, successively followed each otherin the same maze of fable and of error. The writingsof the Arabs on this topic, it may further be remarked, areseldom to be met with; and the European readers of thesewritings are equally rare. For these reasons it is hoped, thatthe following work, which is either extracted immediatelyfrom the most approved Arabic historians, or is compiled,where these failed, from other authorities best deserving ofcredit, will, on account of its authenticity, obta
