(Munich Museum.) 4i6 THE HISTORY OF MANKIND that of the Fans shown on p. 86, apparent only, is found among the Nico-barese, together with a very simple bow for shooting pigeons. The poisoned arrows of Java and Borneo are among the most effective thatare known. The poison used in Java, called chettik, comes from the Strychnostiente ; another, antias, from Antiaris toxicaria, the Upas. Both affect the heart.

Here too the forest tribes areregarded as dangerous poison-brewers, and European travellers are often warnedby friendly natives against accepting food from them. Firearms have made considerable progress. In Formosa, bows and arrowshave been almost driven out by Chinese matchlocks. The admirable armourersof Java, Sumatra, Bali, Celebes, and Borneo can also construct firearms. The DRESS, WEAPONS, AND OTHER PROPERTY OF THE MALAYS 417 Sassaks of Lombok even bore their own gun-barrels.
