, build rectangular houses withseveral rooms and ornamented doors, form the transition to the Malays ofMadagascar and the Indian Archipelago, and to the races of the Pacific, whoserichly-ornamented and often large houses, very various in design, offer the mostperfect work found in the way of timber-building among natural races. Amongthem, however, we find at the same time (as on Easter Island) the beginnings ofmasonry in connection with monumental sculpture. The Polar races live in stonebuildings or in huts in which snow takes the place of wood. A zone of stonehouses with several stories passes through India, Arabia, and the Berber regionsof Africa.
