At sunset, the priso-ner was slaughtered, and the festival concludedwith sumptuous banquets. The whole of this month was devoted to festivi-ty. The people wore their best dresses, dancesand amusements in their gardens were frequent,the populace pursued the chase, and the noblesamused themselves with warlike exercises in thefield, or in vessels upon the lake. In the eighth month, which beo;an upon the 16thof July, a solemn festival was celebrated in honourof the goddess Centcotl, under the name of Xilonouher name changing, as we have already observed,according to the state of the maize.
