chap, v.) POPERY AT ITS BIRTH.—A. D. 606. 105 Pious frauds and persecution declared lawful. Praying at the sepulchres of saints. suffered grievously by two monstrous errors which were almostuniversally adopted in the fourth century, and became a source ofinnumerable calamities and mischiefs in the succeeding ages. Thefirst of these maxims was, that it was an act of virtue to deceive andlie, when by that means the interests of the church might be promoted;and the second equally horrible, though in another point of view,was that errors in religion, when maintained and adhered to, afterproper admonition, were punishable with civil penalties and corporaltortures. The former of these erroneous maxims was now of along standing ; it had been adopted for some ages past, and hadproduced an incredible number of ridiculous fables, fictitious prodi-gies, and pious frauds, to the unspeakable detriment of that gloriouscause in which they were employed.
