He justly imputed these atrocities to the ex-emption of the clergy from trial before the secular courts, whilethe ecclesiastical tribunals, to whom they were subject, had nopower to inflict capital, or, indeed, any adequate punishment. Hedispatched a special messenger to the Pope, apprising him of whathad been done.
