Wegive the narrative, however, of this very inter-esting interview in the words of Madame Ke-camier: ^ The next day, at the Ave Maria, I was atthe Coliseum, where I saw the queens carriage,which had arrived a few minutes before me.We entered the amphitheatre together, com-plimenting each other on our punctuality, andstrolled through this immense ruin^as the sunwas setting, and to the sound of distant bells. Finally we seated ourselves on the stepsof the cross in the centre of the amphitheatre,while Charles Napoleon Bonaparte and M.Ampere, who had followed us, walked about ata little distance. The night came on—an Ital-ian night. The moon rose slowly in the heav-ens, behind the open arcades of the Coliseum.The breeze of evening sighed through the de-serted galleries. Near me sat this woman, her-self the living ruin of so extraordinary a for-tune. A confused and undefinable emotionforced me to silence. The queen also seemedabsorbed in her reflections.
